From: michelle Subject: [workmom] Sleep-away camps with short sessions - compiled list Date: Wed, 20 Oct 2004 20:50:22 +0000 Thanks to everyone who responded! -Michelle There is a Y camp in PA (Speers-Elgabar) that has 2 week programs. I don't know of anyone that has gone, but am considering it for my daughter for next summer. We went there with the Girl Scouts for a camping weekend, and the facility and activities were great, as were the counselors (many of whom also work there over the summer). try www.campuskids.com my son went to Camp Minisink (Campus Kids) last summer. It is a Monday thru Friday camp and offers 2, 4 , 6 and 8 week programs. The kids get picked up on Monday at Chatham Middle school and get dropped off Friday night at the Middle School. He had a great time...loved getting away during the week and coming home to us on the weekend. Just so you know, Camp Minisink is a campy camp...kids sleep in bunks...no bathroom in bunk. They also have 2 other camps, one on the Centenary College campus where the kids sleep in dorms, and one College in CT where they also sleep in dorms. My kids have gone to Camp Na Sho Pa for the past two summers. I think they have short term programs. It's very low key, not a lot of competitive sports (they do have tennis courts, swimming, crafts, a lake, etc.). They love it, and want to go back. It's run by the same family for 60 years (out of Great Neck!). Reasonably priced, too. Also, it's about 2 hours away (near Middletown, NY, so you can visit easily. The one that I had always heard about is Island Lake Camp in Starrucca, Pennsylvania. They have a very flexible program that can be two weeks or three weeks or combinations. (I don't know about one week.) There is a wide range of activities, from circus-type activities to general sports, swimming, etc. I have a friend whose son goes there and I can give you her e-mail if you have questions. I encourage you to contact Ed (or Donna) Okin at Camp Connection, a free camp-referral service (free to us camper-types; the camps pay him a referral fee). He is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful and worked with us to find perfect camps for our kids. The phone number is 973-984-5700. (If you mention me, you can say that he directed my son to Camp Taconic.) The way it works is that he will ask you what you are looking for (length of stay; co-ed or not; sports-oriented vs. arts-oriented; geographical area) and will then send you maps and videos. My sister's kids went to Lohikan in Pennsylvania (they have 2 week sessions). They loved it. I have other friends who send their kids there to and have for several years. Check out campuskids.com I believe that is the website. It is Monday thru Friday the kids are dropped off and picked up 3 campus's one in Port Jervis NY, another in CT and the last one is in Hackettstown NJ. My 10 year old is going this summer for 4 weeks. I know that you can do 2 weeks. My daughter went to Camp Galil for two weeks which is about 20 minutes from New Hope. She loved it. She also did the one week program at Mountaintop from Deeny Riback which she also loved. My good friend sent her son to Campus Kids which is a sleepaway camp where the kids come home for the weekend. He really liked it and is going back next year. I know that you can pick the number of weeks at that camp. Southwoods for the first time last year and is going back this year. He really enjoyed the camp - it is a 4 week camp though. Beautiful area, great counsellors, great facilities and a truely well run camp.
